The New Challengers

Welcome to HGC4. The HGC Series is a gathering of friends that come together to talk, watch, and play the game that we all love… Street Fighter. Whether you’re new to the game or a hardcore veteran, there’s great friendly competition for you here. And it’s all completely free of charge. You don’t even have to play Street Fighter to attend HGC, spectators are always welcome. Join us and see what HGC is all about!

HGC4: The New Challengers has been scheduled for Sunday July 5, 2009 at 2:00PM. The event will start with round-robin seeding followed by a double-elimination tournament to decide the HGC4 champion.

Points will be awarded to players in the double-elimination tournament in the following manner:
+100 points per Winner’s Bracket game win.
+50 points for a Loser’s Bracket game win.
+200 points for 1st Place
+100 points for 2nd Place
+50 points for 3rd Place.
+100 points for a Winner’s Bracket bye.
+0 points for a Loser’s Bracket bye.
+100 points for tournament attendance.

The round-robin will be scheduled using 4 Stations, each Station running SF4 for PS3. The Stations will be labeled A through D. Each Station will include two standard PS3 controllers for players to use. You are welcome to bring your own PS3 compatible controller if a regular PS3 pad is not to your liking. Each round-robin match will be 1 game, best 2/3 rounds.

Following the round-robin there will be a 1 hour break for food, drinks, and socializing. The Stations will be available for casual play.

After the break, we will be starting the double-elimination tournament. At this point, 2 Stations will be unavailable for casual play, as they will be used for tournament play. Tournament matches will consist of best 2/3 games, each game being best 2/3 rounds. The winner of the double-elimination tournament will be the HGC4 champion.

Professor

For years he hasn’t been one to actively participate in our home games. As soon as the hype started with SF4, he made a valiant effort to learn how to play and dedicate time to practice for the tournaments. What amazes us is that he doesn’t come to any of our casual sessions, but instead he takes his own time and works on his own pace. Little is known about his play ethic, but it has certainly paid off! From one of the bottom seeds in HGC1, he has risen to 4th in HGC3. Performance is not a criteria for picking our HGC stars, but in this case it is merely a side effect to his outstanding dedication.

Morning Update [5/6/2009]: Even more props go out to Mikey for being frustrated so much with the 360 controller and buying a PS3 and SF4 yesterday. Well played my friend!

Afternoon Update [5/6/2009]: Once again..more props to Mikey for picking up the last FightStick @ EB and cockblocking me while I’m at work.

Jerico

Being almost completely dormant since Alpha2, Jerico had only a few hours of seat time with SF4 prior to the tournament. He retained most of the basics, but on top of that he gathered last minute advice and integrated it into his game. Many players have difficulty changing their play whether it be because of new execution timing, or plain old stubborn traits. Jerico was able to change on the fly, even practiced during the Round Robin break to add to his game. His ability to understand strategic concepts and execute them in battle is exceptional.  He will definitely be a force to be reckoned with in time.

SUPERFOX

Amazing output right from the gate. Even though her practice prior to the tournament has only been on an Xbox360 pad, she made a quick transition with a different controller and blind-sided some of the players. Someone get her a FightPad quick!

The amount of knowledge and theory coming from SUPERFOX stunned some of our regulars. Aside from her gameplay, she made a tremendous effort of coming out from working a 5AM shift on a Sunday! Only a true SF’er would sacrifice their health and wellbeing to play! We see some real promise with this one!

Final Thoughts

This type of dedication really impresses us at HGC. We really do like to see this effort and in future tourneys, expect there to be more praise and potentially more prizes for these outstanding players!

Round 3 everyone.

HGC3 will be coming up on Sunday May 3, 2009 @ 4PM and as usual it will start with round-robin seeding followed by a double elimination tournament. Also, as with the previous tournaments, points will be awarded to players for attendance (+100), winners bracket wins (+100), loser bracket wins (+50), and 1st/2nd/3rd place tournament finishes (+200/+100/+50). A player with a bye is also awarded points as they are considered as a win.

In addition to the round-robin and double elimination tournament, HGC3 will include three exhibition matches. An exhibition match consists of two players going head-to-head in the game of their choice. Matches will be best 2/3 games, with the winner earning the ever important bragging rights. The three exhibition matches of HGC3 are as follows:

For the HGC series we will be doing an incremental point system seeding. Your points will carry over for each following HGC, and in the final HGC you will be seeded based on your points. The HGC champ will then receive a nice prize:)

The points will be awarded based on the following:

1st place: +200
2nd place: +100
3rd place: +50

For tournament attendance, you get +100. In the playoffs you will be awarded +100 each game won as long as you are in the winners bracket. As soon as you are placed in the losers bracket, each game will then be worth +50 points. This should encourage everyone to play strong throughout the entire tournament.

Sorry for the lateness but most of you already know this is coming. I’m just making it official.

This time around we’re going to do things a little different. There will be a $5 tournament charge. This is for everyone who is attending and playing. This is not going towards any prizes, rather it will be going towards food and drinks.

Once again it will be in a double elimination format. Last time we had a shortage of players and proceeded with a round-robin for seeding. Depending on the number of people participating we may do the same round-robin but with only one match (just to limit the amount of time required).

Please RSVP asap. Anyone who does not RSVP by Friday will not have a guaranteed spot.
